Why AZ tower is boring

Some places are friendly and welcoming, some places are definitely not. You will recognize them by lack of parking place for your bicycle, or by lack of pedestrian cross, as this place seems to be cut from other world of human beings. Just like the AZ Tower in Brno.

image

Do you want to come here again? Me not.

image

No place to park a bike…

image

If you don’t own a car, (and a parking place underground) you’re not welcom here anymore.

image

I just have no idea what it is.

Now you know why AZ Tower is so empty and lifeless. The environment there is just opposite to what people need for comfort living in the city. Every place has a potential to be pleasant and cozy, barrier-free and bike-friendly. It’s a pity, that some developers are building the highest (the biggest, the most expensive…) instead of buiding for better living.

Highlighting

Details make the difference.
Just one lamp above the pedestrian cross will make the drivers be careful when going along the night street.

image

It’s safe and convinient for everybody.
When approaching the highlightened pedestrian cross, you (as a driver) would mention pedestrians approaching the road and slow down in time. Btw, this place is a large park, where many people of all ages are jogging. So the lamp above the crossing is just as important as a sign.
Lets walk further, you’ll see another (omg, so unsafe) cross…

image

Invisible pedestrian cross. No wonder it is unsafe and dangerous for everybody. The drivers cannot see approaching pedestrians. Even more the drivers cannot see pedestrians while crossing the road and slow down in time.

Let’s see closer.

image

image

The color has almost disappeared, the sign is completely invisible because all of the cars barked before it. For sure you wouldn’t mention both pedestrians and sign; you’ll have no time and bo space to slowdown and stop if any runner would appear there just at the moment you pass the pedestrian cross…

Sad story, ha?
How can we change this? May be you know which institution is responsible for making pedestrian crossings highlightened, especially where it is so needed… don’t hesotate to share your knowledge about this problem and experience in comments.

A lack of trash bins will lead to this.

There is a new public space in Brno.

image

A beautiful place with numerous minimalistic white seats and fountains, as well as green lawns.

image

All above the parking hidden underground.

image

However, something has gone wrong.

image

The point is that there is no trash bins in the whole area. Just during my short stay in that area I’ve mentioned a lot of moms with carriages and children, old and young people. The place is magnetic, many different people are coming here every day. But probably, architects designed this place for people for filling an empty space in the city center.

Crazy cycling paths in Brno

Yes, Brno has many cycling paths. Short, long, safe and unsafe, on the sidewalks and along multi-line roads, most of them are disconnected from each other.

image

Sometimes you see these explanating tables.

image

Another plan telling where you can go and where you cannot.

image

But usually you will see only this sign, telling you to disappear continue going by bicycle along the road. As it is in Svatopluka Čecha street.
Mention, that the sidewalk is wide enough to place beautiful cycling path marks and keep a space for pedestrians too.

image

This quiet residential street is connecting 2 important cycling paths.
Probably, the safest solution would be to transform the whole street into a bicycle street like here and here.

image

There is enough space to implment 3-meters ‘red carper’ bicycle street with both direction traffic and 0.75 cm buffer zones from each side of the street, where the locals leave their cars parked. So finally 2 big city districts – Kralové Pole and Žabovřesky – would be connected by the safest bicycle commuting in Brno.

Smart tree care.

Look, how they maintain a healthy young tree by means of rubber and wooden sticks!

image

This smart solution can be a tip for many cities for sure.

image

Taking care of young trees, cutting and prunning them in a right way will make them grow in a mature healthy trees with safely arranged branches and no extra costs for maintainance. Bravo, Brno.

A wrong border.

Usually, most of Brno sidewalks are done in a way, so they are comfortable for everybody walking: old and young, people with carriage, people with luggage, people on bicycle etc. The secret of good sidewalks is that they are pulled down on the same level as the road where it makes sence.

image

This is an example of good and bad sidewalks in one photo. As you can see, they were repairing something (the pipes) under ground. They had to demolish a part of the sidewalk, so you can see a newely placed black asphalt… and a wrong border too.

image

No, this hadn’t happen.

image

How should old people jump over this, ha? Or may be moms will be happy to lift their carriages every time? Or anybody carrying a luggage on wheels? Every second person has experienced a discomfort in his back when lifting a suitcase. Some time ago I’ve got my back block when lifting my luggage just to pass couple of stairs. I had to attend physioterapeut and rehabilitation center after this!

image

Obviously, this border doesn’t belong here. Nobody would appreciate another impediment on his way.

Brno has so many beautiful sidewalks, it’s a really comfortable city for everybody: there are many lifts and non-barrier crossroads and entrances everywhere. So why should a sidewalk be done in a bad way when it is possible to be done in a good way?
